Obituary of James J. Walker, Sr.

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James “Jim” J. Walker, Sr. passed into God’s loving embrace peacefully on September 15, 2024 with his family by his side. Jim was born in Manhattan on February 11, 1932 to the late Benjamin and Catherine (Snee) Walker. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Betty and his son James J Walker, Jr., as well as, his best friend and brother, John, and his sisters, Marion and Helen. Jim & Betty’s pride and joy were their children and their families: Elizabeth and Thomas Flynn of Hamilton, Douglas and Constance Walker of Yardley, Pa, Catherine and Douglas Fish of Hamilton and Michael and Kimberly Walker of Hamilton. Left to cherish his memory are his nine grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Elizabeth, Thomas (Marissa), James and Caitlin Flynn, Douglas, Jr. (Jessica), Benjamin, and Erin Walker, Marykate and Michael Walker and four great-grandchildren: Jack Flynn, Hannah Flynn-Donelan, Eleanor Flynn and Vienna Walker whom he doted on and so enjoyed their visits. Special gratitude should be given to his caregiver, Eter Osikmashvili, who lovingly cared for him these past fifteen months along with his aide, Precious, and the staff of Holy Redeemer/Vitality Hospice who were compassionate and quick to respond to his needs. Jim was a New York City boy through and through. He lived in Brooklyn and Queens the majority of his youth. He was a proud graduate of Saint Theresa of Avila Grammar School and Boys High School. Jim served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon leaving the service, he came home, got engaged, and then married the love of his life. He and Betty settled in Brooklyn. While raising his family and working for American Cyanamid, he attended and graduated from Pace University. In 1961, when Cyanamid relocated to Princeton, Jim, Betty and children moved to Hamilton, New Jersey. He continued to work for Cyanamid but missed the hustle and bustle of the city, so in 1968 he returned to work in NYC and began his career with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as an accountant. Jim had lifelong friendships that he maintained from his youth, as well as his employment, and during his life with Betty. Being the son of an Irish immigrant, Jim truly loved all things Irish. He visited Ireland many times especially his mother’s birthplace in Tubbercurry, County Sligo. He was a founding member of the Msgr. Crean Division 1 AOH having served as its treasurer for many years along with being a member the Sons & Daughters of Erin. He proudly served as the treasurer for the Serra Club, which promotes religious vocations. Jim had a remarkable ability to remember pertinent dates. He would easily recall the exact date and the exact year of any event. He was a history enthusiast and could tell the story of every major battle or campaign of World War I, World War II, or the Korean War. He was a true lover of history and a voracious reader. He used his commuting time on the train to read books traveling into the city and on his way home.
